Registering with the KvK: steps, costs and what follows
When you start a business in the Netherlands you register with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK), at the latest one week after you start. The tax authority then receives your details automatically.
When do you register?
You can register from one week before your start date until one week after. The KvK checks whether you are an entrepreneur: do you independently supply goods or services to others with the aim of making a profit?
How it works
First complete the online form; for a sole proprietorship you log in with DigiD. This takes about fifteen minutes. Then book an appointment at a KvK office to finalise, bringing valid ID. You receive your KvK number at the appointment.
What does it cost?
There is a one-off registration fee of € 85.15, deductible as a business expense. A trade register extract costs extra.
What happens next?
The KvK passes your details to the tax authority, which decides whether you are a VAT entrepreneur and sends your VAT identification number and omzetbelastingnummer. No separate registration with the tax authority is needed.
Checklist for the first weeks
- A business bank account, separate from your private one.
- An invoice template with all required details, including your KvK number and VAT ID.
- Records of income, costs and hours worked (for the hours criterion).
- The deadline of your first VAT return.
- Whether a provisional income tax assessment makes sense.
- Sole proprietorship or BV, if you expect a high profit.
